The Last Muster

Co-op survival

Gravesend Harbor, 1775. The port is blockaded and the pox has turned the town. Six survivors fight from the wharves to the fort with axes and cutlasses, and a musket that fires once before it needs a long reload.

Build 0.2.19 is out for Windows. Fight through ten chapters with up to five friends, from the Wharves at night to the Fort at dawn. Empty seats are filled by the cast. Pick from six perks and four difficulties, find supplies along the way, and carry what you can into the next safe room.

This update dresses all ten chapters in new buildings, clutter, rooms and landmarks, finishes the Fort with First Light and the Mole, and adds friends dropping in mid-game, gamepad support, an accessibility tab, a second versus map and a first version of campaign versus. Read the 0.2.19 release notes.

Early access: expect it to break.

This is an unfinished game. Some landmarks are still stand-ins, some of the infected's moves are still being made, balance moves from build to build, and you will find bugs. Please play it anyway and tell me what went wrong: which chapter, what you were doing, and how many of you were playing.

  • Windows ZIP · 64-bit Windows 10/11 · 761.5 MB

Unzip it anywhere and run the-last-muster.exe, no installer. It checks for updates when it starts. Compatible copies update automatically; if yours asks for the full build, download this ZIP. Everyone in your group should be on 0.2.19. Have Steam running before you start it if you want to play through Steam lobbies and invites; joining a friend by IP needs nothing. Windows will say it "protected your PC" the first time because the game is not signed yet: click More info, then Run anyway.

The Steam release comes later. Until then friends play together from the zip.

What changed

The latest build, and the work still ahead. More from the workshop.

  • 0.2.19Windows beta

A town built, a fort finished, friends at the door

    • The town: all ten chapters are dressed in new buildings, rooms, clutter and props, from Front Street’s shops to the Fort’s stone walls. Each chapter has a landmark to steer by, and the day chapters put their street lamps out.
    • The Fort: the finale is complete. After the Fire Ship comes First Light, then the last stand on the Mole, with their own sounds and lines.
    • The infected: the crowd can crouch and pounce at you from a few paces; shove it out of the air. The Physician carries a bone saw and has his own moves.
    • Drop in: a friend can join a game already under way and takes over one of the cast where they stand. The host picks the starting chapter in the lobby.
    • Versus: a second map, the Market Square, and a first version of campaign versus: up to four survivors play the chapters while up to four friends steer the specials against them, then swap.
    • Controls and settings: gamepad support with aim assist and pad prompts, and an Accessibility tab with subtitles, sound captions, text size, colour palettes, reduced motion and flashes, and hold toggles.
    • Around it: a music score that follows the fight, first-time hints, credits, and a “Report a problem” button that saves a report for you to send me. Companions get stuck less on the Wharves and the Shipyard.

Still being built: some landmarks are stand-ins, campaign versus is still being finished, and balance keeps moving. Companions can still get stuck in places.

Playing together: use 0.2.19 on every PC and have Steam running for lobbies and invites. The Windows ZIP is 761.5 MB. Start an existing copy to check for an update; if it asks for a full download, use the Windows button above.
